Series: Facade

On my last vacation, I met beautiful people on every street corner and I could only guess at the personalities behind the faces. I met fascinating new people almost every day and was often surprised after a few words exchanged how deceptive first impressions can be.
What makes us look behind the facades and discover what actually makes us human? Why are we so limited in our perspective that we assume everything runs smoothly with beautiful people? Why have we become so superficial that we allow ourselves to be blinded by the façade?
The search for answers inspired me to create my “Facade” series.

In our society, we often hear the phrase “first impressions count”. Whether it’s at a job interview or on a first date, we often simply label our fellow human beings according to their appearance. Too often we forget to look behind the facade and discover the real character. Because behind a smile there can also be watery eyes, and behind a self-confident person there can also be a deeply self-critical and insecure person. Don’t be fooled by the illusory world of our society and look behind the self-created screens of people.

Spring 2020 was a special year. The first lockdown in the corona pandemic. Numerous restrictions, homeschooling, curfews, contact restrictions, …

Many were hit hard, whether financially or emotionally. The pandemic has left its mark on children and young people in particular, as well as our elderly fellow human beings.

What I learned for myself during this extraordinary time was not to look at life through rose-tinted spectacles. Rather, it was a challenge to maintain perspective and focus on the little things in life.

What good is the disappointment over the canceled long-distance trip or the postponed event?

How nice it is to have more time for the family, for example. Or to discover butterflies again in your own garden.

So keep an overview of your life.

Maybe you need a little push every now and then to do what you really want to do. Or my picture reminds you of your inner desire to do something new and gives you the courage to finally jump off the starting block with a powerful YES.

People who run their mouths about other people aren’t just talking about you! They also talk about neighbors, family, friends, the cashier, the waitress in the café, the boss, work colleagues and ultimately also about themselves, without consciously realizing it.

This has always been the case and will probably always remain so.

If someone is perceived as “different” or seems to be a threat to our own existence or way of thinking, we simply talk badly about the person.

Whereby “different” means not conforming to the norm, be it being too fat, too thin, too sensitive, too weak, too clever or too stupid, having a different skin color or belonging to a different religion. You can always find something!

Free yourself from the opinions of others.

You shouldn’t care what others think about you.

Always listen to yourself and don’t let outside opinions get too close to you, be yourself!

Everybody’s darling is everybody’s fool!

In summer 2019, I took part in a charity open-air art exhibition entitled:
“The flowers make the garden, not the fence.”

Wow, I really struggled with the title. I’m not a “flower painter”, I thought to myself at first. The longer I thought about this title, the clearer the double meaning became.

“Crossing boundaries”, “thinking differently”, “thinking outside the box”, “swimming against the tide”, “experiencing new things”, “changing perspectives”, “open to new things”, … and, and, and.

Suddenly, countless ideas were circling in my head. I couldn’t put sketches on paper so quickly.

The result is a flower power graffiti on canvas, with a hippie girl vaguely hinted at in the foreground.

I am grateful that I was able to be a part of the “flower exhibition”. This shows how important it is to really embrace something new and not get stuck in habits.

Be brave, leave your comfort zone and try something new!

Frida Kahlo, … what a woman!

A woman whose life is characterized by pain, suffering and her love for the painter Diego Rivera.
A woman who never lost her zest for life despite her blows of fate.

The consequences of her accident are lifelong pain and physical limitations. During her rest period after the serious accident, Frida discovered painting for herself.

Impressive!

A quote comes to mind:
“The strongest people are not those who always win, but those who never give up.”

How often do we burden ourselves with the unimportant things in life? We are stuck in the hamster wheel and don’t see how beautiful life is!

It’s worth fighting for!

Why is it so hard to enjoy the moment?

Because we miss this moment, we don’t consciously perceive it. How often do we worry about the future or make plans.

We are preparing life for later. We focus on accumulating money, prestige and security and postpone real life and enjoyment as if it were immortal.

– Yes, of course I would like to go on a trip around the world now, but that costs money. That’s not possible at the moment. But when I retire, I will make them.

– I would certainly like to be happier and more content here and now. But I first have to complete my training/study/exam/…. conclude.

I ask you: But what if today is your last day?

You can’t postpone life forever!

You know when you have to make a decision and you don’t know whether your heart or your mind will win?

I keep noticing in myself that intuition decisions are so difficult because the mind often gets in the way and I lack the courage to jump over this hurdle.

But perhaps looking at the picture will give you the courage you need to put rationality to one side and follow the path your heart shows you.

After visiting the Egyptian Museum in Berlin, I was completely captivated by the bust of Nefertiti.

Who was the mysterious beauty?

How was it possible to create such a work of art in 1300 BC?
