Series: Native language

No matter how different people are, there are things that connect us. More than 7,000 languages and countless dialects are spoken on our planet, but there is one language we all understand: music. I always think of a formative event in my life. I got involved in a refugee project that aimed to promote integration through creativity. An afternoon together showed me that origin, skin color and even language don’t matter if you do things together that you love – like music or art. Creativity and music combine, which inspired me to create this musician series “Mother Tongue”.

In addition to painting, music also plays a big role in my family. We are open to all styles of music. So also for reggae. As a music-loving painter, I can’t get around the fact that Bob Marley really had a character head that absolutely had to be painted.

After the decision was made to portray Bob, I didn’t have to think long about the color scheme. It had to be the “Jamaican colors” for me.

After initial research, I discovered that the colors green, yellow and red are more likely to be the colors of the Rastafarian religious community.

In the 1970s, Marley was considered the best-known representative of Rastafari. He managed to give the black ghetto youth in the Caribbean and the USA a new self-confidence.

Ray Charles has been with me all my life. In addition to his music, I am particularly impressed by his biography.

He grew up in extreme poverty and without a father. He lost his sight forever at the age of seven. And when he was 15 years old, his mother died.

Instead of giving up, he pursued his dream and made it to the top!

When I listen to his music, I always think of this wonderful sentence: “Don’t dream your life, live your dream!”

By the way, there’s another nice anecdote about the picture: when I put Ray on the canvas and published it on Instagram, his granddaughter got in touch with me. At first I thought it was a fake, but it turned out it really was her ….. what an honor!

Rihanna

  • 100 x 140 cm Canvas with 4 cm thick slats
  • Sold

Rihanna’s portrait focuses on the symbolism of color. Rihanna should become a little more two-dimensional overall.

The dominant pink is a feminine color. She is friendly, tender, charming, sweet and sensitive. Pink is THE color to give designs a feminine touch.
However, the color pink can also come across as arrogant, scheming or egocentric. Exactly the right color choice for my motif!

How color symbolism has changed over the course of time is particularly evident in the example of the color pink. Until the 1940s, pink was a typical color for boys. At that time, girls’ dresses were often blue, the color of the Virgin Mary.

Companies such as Deutsche Telekom (Magenta), the magazine Cosmopolitan and the manufacturer Matell adorn the logo for the Barbie doll with pink.

As with Rihanna, Britney’s focus is on color symbolism. I chose purple as the main color for them.

Purple is associated with values such as wealth, luxury, passion, fantasy, esotericism and magic.
But secrets, restlessness, ambivalence, eccentricity or artificiality are also attributed to the meaning of purple.

In historical Japan, only the highest-ranking Buddhist monks wore purple robes.
In Brazil, Thailand, Venezuela and Turkey, however, purple is the color of mourning. In Japan, purple is not a popular color for weddings, as the color stands for fear and sin in the culture.

Companies that use purple or violet include Milka, Yahoo!, BenQ, FedEx and the job portal Monster.

Mark Forster

  • 100 x 140 cm Canvas with 4 cm thick slats
  • Sold

Mark Forster – a young musician who has always impressed me with his lyrics. I was particularly impressed by the song “Auf dem Weg”, which is one of his older hits. It deals with the question of whether the goal is really the goal.
“I know now:
On the path I walk,
I have rushed past so many things,
what I’m looking for is on the way,
I’m watching now, I’m finally letting it happen.”

I know that for me, the journey is the goal, with all its ups and downs, mountains and valleys. That’s what life is all about.

Samu Haber. Everyone knows him, the blond Finnish singer. I already knew his music from the radio, but I first became aware of him as a coach on ‘The Voice’. Even though I sometimes found it difficult to understand him and his assessments with his Finnish accent, I still understood his attitude to life. He radiates total contentment for me, which I find impressive. Words are not the only language for communication.
