Series: Women who don’t let themselves be dazzled

More appearance than reality – how often do we allow ourselves to be deceived by appearances, opinions or our own ideas? We fall for wishful thinking because we are all too often blinded by people, looks or promises. I dedicate my series to people who have both feet on the ground and have the courage not to be ‘perfect’.

Woman with Glasses I was created in 2022 during a seemingly endless period of rain in April.

After two years of restrictions due to the pandemic, I longed for the outdoors, sunshine and meeting other people. Finally sitting in a café on the terrace again, feeling the first warm rays of sunshine on your skin and studying faces with their respective accessories.

Winter is finally saying goodbye and life is back outdoors.

During one of my visits to a street café in Munich, I read an interesting newspaper article about sunglasses.

I looked around and could only agree with the author that sunglasses have long been much more than just protection from too much sunlight. The desire for a quick masquerade and luxury accessories available to everyone has many faces.

Not only agents, FBI cops have been wearing them in movies for decades. The sunglasses are also the ideal disguise accessory in the real world for bodyguards, criminals and young and old divas.

But what effect does it have on our communication partners if the other person only shows a shielded poker face during the conversation?

An interesting question.

This gave me the idea for my “Sunglasses” series.

In the newspaper article, a psychologist described an experiment. Certain parts of the face were covered, either the upper or lower half of the face.

The conclusion: if only the lower half of the face is covered, it is not so difficult to deduce the other person’s emotional state.

It becomes more complicated when the upper half of the face is shielded – as is also the case with people who wear sunglasses.

The eyes reflect the soul of a person, as the saying goes. Wearing sunglasses simply makes you look cooler because your emotions are harder to read. This prevents the wearer from looking into the emotional world.

Exciting!

It’s not for nothing that they say: A captivating look. At first glance. A sharp look. Our gaze is extremely powerful. It allows us to make contact, conveys emotions and captures our attention.

If the gaze swerves, too often towards the sky or the ground, this conveys insecurity and nervousness.

Christian Morgenstern summed it up wonderfully: “The body is the translator of the soul into the visible:”

So:
Open your eyes, notice the other person and enjoy an interesting conversation!
